Another thing J and I talked about.

J really doesn’t like the idea of paying for access to social networks (app.net). When I gave him the usual ‘if you’re not paying for something, you’re the product’ he came out with this:

Email works across all platforms and systems, yet nobody profits from this. Looking at articles about the history of email, we don’t even see individuals credited with creating this ‘glue.’

Why don’t we create a unified, cross-platform standard for short status updates like that?

There is something called OStatus which works across status.net, identica, and a few other platforms. It’s clunky but (J thinks) the idea behind it is right.

What do we say to that?
